For vaccination of healthy horses as an aid in the prevention of veremia caused by West Nile Virus. The virus was first isolated and identified from birds, mosquitoes, and mammals including horses in the states of the northwestern United States in 1999. Since then, the virus has spread to southwestern and Midwestern states. If you vaccinate against Western, Eastern, and or Venezuelan encephalitis, you should vaccinate against West Nile also. The efficacy was demonstrated in horses that received two doses of the vaccine and were challenged one year post-vaccination with West Nile Virus. The vaccine protected 95% of the vaccinates against infection, while 82% of the controls were viremic. Owners should be advised that vaccinated horses may develop antibody to West Nile Virus, which may affect their ability to export the animal.
