Cautions:
This medication does not have an FDA approved indication for use in animals, but it is a common and acceptable practice for veterinarians to prescribe this human medication for use in animals. Do not use tobramycin ophthalmic if your pet has a viral or fungal infection in the eye. It is used to treat infections caused by bacteria only. Do not use other eye drops or medications during treatment with tobramycin ophthalmic unless otherwise directed by your veterinarian. The following drugs can potentially interact with tobramycin: gentamicin, amphotericin B, ketoconazole, erythromycin, cimetidine, phenobarbital, and phenytoin. Contact your veterinarian if your animal experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; vomiting; widespread hives and itching.
Side effects:
Side effects may include hypersensitivity (lid itching, swelling, redness of the eye) has been reported rarely. Mydriasis (dilation of pupil) and conjunctival paresthesias (stinging, numbness, watering of the eye) may also occur. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
Usage:
Tobramycin solution should be administered as directed by your veterinarian. Clear any debris or discharge from the eye area with a sterile eyewash solution prior to applying this medication. Exercise proper caution not to touch the dropper opening to any surface including eyes or hands as that may contaminate the sterile surface. Always wash your hands before and after applying this medication.
